Cardinals Must Decide On Ryne Stanek’s $6 Million Option Now

The Cardinals face a deadline to decide on reliever Ryne Stanek's $6 million option. See the stats and the smart move for St. Louis.

Joel Hofer is not the goalie everyone talks about, but he is the one saving the Blues right now. While big markets get the glory, Hofer is quietly stacking wins in St. Louis. His record is 5-3-1, featuring a 2.24 goals against average alongside a .923 save percentage. These numbers look great, but the real story is how he got them. He faces nearly 29 shots on goal each game. That is a heavy load for a team that cannot stop the puck well.

Most goalies with similar stats play behind a defense that blocks shots. Hofer does not have that luxury. According to Bleedin’ Blue, he achieved a positive goals saved above expected figure. This means he stops more goals than the quality of chances should allow. He has to make the tough saves when the system breaks down. That is the mark of a true Vezina candidate.

Stealing games on the road

The proof is in the recent box scores. On Oct. 2 against Dallas, Hofer recorded a 25-save shutout. He stopped all seven high-danger shots he faced. The Stars generated roughly 3.14 expected goals that night, yet Hofer kept them scoreless. He did it again against Winnipeg on Oct. 19. He stopped 32 of 33 shots in a tight 2-1 win. While the Jets produced 2.49 expected goals, Hofer ended up 1.49 goals better than expected. He stopped six of seven high-danger chances in that game.

Against Vegas three days later, he stopped nine of 11 high-danger shots. He made 26 saves in total. These are the kinds of performances that win trophies. A goalie who steals points under pressure has a better case than one who just looks good behind a wall. The Blues offense has been slow to start, and Hofer keeps them in the game.

The contract clock is ticking

This success comes with a deadline looming. Hofer is 26 and carries a $3.4 million cap hit. Following the 2026-27 season, his status will shift to restricted free agent. That is the same time Jordan Binnington’s contract comes up. The front office has to decide who they want for the long haul. Every strong start adds weight to his name in that conversation. If he keeps stopping the best chances at this rate, the league will have to pay attention.

His role evolved from backup duty to sharing starts and finally becoming the official starter. The team needed a spark after being shut out in its two previous contests. On Thursday night, Hofer made 31 saves against the Boston Bruins. A crucial stop on JJ Peterka at the doorstep prevented Boston from scoring. He also stopped Mark Kastelic’s shot after recovering from playing a loose puck. Field Level Media reported that fourteen of his stops came in the third period alone. Boston held a 32-18 shot advantage for the game. The Blues won 4-1 anyway.

Hofer is doing the heavy lifting while the defense tries to find its footing. He is facing nearly 29 shots on goal each game. That workload separates him from the pack. The trophy race is a marathon, but the first nine games tell a clear story.
